Writing - Virtual Assistant Police

In writing, we are engaging in translations of the same words into different stories. Even though there are limited story styles, in some opinions only 7, writers produce thousands of variations. This means that writers have a serious responsibility to do the best they can. In producing stories, we use different machines and software on which there are virtual assistants.

The paperclip associated with Microsoft Word is probably the oldest assistant, but it has grown into a higher level of performance since then. They can greatly enhance the quality of the writing, but what is offered can sometimes alter the meaning of our work. We are now on another even higher level with AI, which is amazing but also worrying. AI can take a variety of forms and appear to be plausible.

What I'm concerned with is the influence on crime writing in particular. Having recently finished a novel within that genre, I was disappointed in the formulaic style used by the author to suit a pattern that I've noticed in TV dramas. I enjoy this genre for the challenge of solving the puzzle, but more and more frequently, the investigating team is made up of an aging detective, an incompetent detective, an alcoholic or drug-dependent detective, all led by an inexperienced female officer. The author I read had done the same thing. These extraneous human weaknesses tend to impinge on the puzzle and move it on to the back burner.

The possibility of using AI to influence writing would lean more towards the dilution of the puzzle element of mystery writing, which concerns me.

Keep the faith.

God Bless
