From the beginning, it must be said that working on creative activities does not have to be about making something saleable or with the view to winning some competitive event. After all, winning or selling depends on the subjective opinion of people purporting to be experts in the field. In fact, creativity is a function of being human.
Writing
The type of creative activity in which you participate is a matter of personal choice. The breadth of such activities is wide. Many people would say that they are either creative or not so. In my opinion, we are all creative. Once again, I must say that I am not commenting on ability or quality.
I have had a leaning towards writing for a very long time, but didn't begin working until I'd fully retired from gainful employment. I've also enjoyed pencil sketching since I produced one piece of work at the age of 14 that generated some praise from my art teacher. The only time it occurred throughout my education. I was channelled into the sciences at school, which excluded art subjects.
Drawing
Naturally, I searched 'reasons for creativity', and as usual, it resulted in a plethora of information. Ranging from 5 reasons to 100 reasons.
What can be garnered from that is that creativity is a part of life. Whether taken part in as an activity, or viewed as an observer. Just consider film making, theatre going, and gallery attendance. Why sit for 2 or 3 hours watching something that is not real and highly unlikely?
What brought this to my attention was the fact that a tendency to have difficulty sleeping may be caused by a life lacking emotional support or outlet. It describes the development of creative thoughts while lying awake, and also feeling safe and secure. For me, proof that the human animal is a creative beast. After all, we have been painting on cave walls for millennia.
The bottom line is that to maintain some level of sanity, we should allow that part of our brain free rein to express itself.
